October and November are usually my favorite months to put outfits together. Having spent the last 6 years in New York and North Carolina, I’ve gotten used to the smell of pine cones in the crisp, chill air, the Chai Tea cravings [which I personally enjoy over Pumpkin Spice Lattes], Casey annoying the heck out of me to bake him paleo banana bread, and bundling up in cozy, oversized sweaters. So now that it is officially NOVEMBER [can you believe it?!!] and temperatures are expected to rise to 88 degrees this afternoon, I’ve had to make some adjustments to say the least. I don’t know how much longer I can fight the urge to wear some of my favorite cold weather pieces, but I wanted to show you how I’ve been dressing the past four weeks and put a list of some tips to dress for Fall when you live in the South.

1. Color Palette: I honestly think there are ways to pull off all colors year round, but since I’ve been wearing light weight and short sleeve items, I’ve been sticking to more traditional Fall color palettes. Olive green and beige, denim and wine, camel and mustard, garnet and gold, navy and purple, grey and blush, black and white, & brown and burnt orange [to name a few].

2. Layering: Layering in general makes outfits look more polished and complete. Think of unbuttoned chambray or plaid shirts, cargo/utility vests, scarves and light-weight cardigans. I love mixing different fabrics and textures together, and in this case patterns.

3. Shoe Game: Unless you’re going to the beach or to get a pedicure, swap the flip-flops for cool leather or suede sneakers/flats. Booties [whether heeled, flat, or wedged] are always appropriate, regardless of your location.

4. Cropped Jackets: I recently got this jacket [which will be featured on the blog soon], and have also been wearing my denim and moto jackets despite the heat. As you see in this post, I wore a leather jacket over a tank and jean shorts. [Don’t worry, I removed the plaid shirt first!]

5. Lipstick/Makeup: Moderately updating your beauty routine makes a huge difference. My favorite “Fall” neutral lip is Modesty. It’s a pinky nude with a slight brown tone, just a touch darker than my natural lip color and is so so pretty. If you’re not a fan of uber dark lips, try Shrinagar. It’s a cooler-toned sheer berry and I’ve been wearing it every Fall and Winter since being introduced to it four years ago. If you aren’t scared of a bold lip, the color is buildable. When I want a more dramatic pop, I wear Rebel.

Other than wearing a lot of sleeveless sweaters, this list pretty much sums it up! Don’t be surprised if you see me dress like a fool in cashmere and faux fur in the very near future. As I said before, I’m not quite sure how much longer I can avoid it! If you also live in the South, I’d love to hear how you dress the part this time of year!
