When it comes to maternity clothing, I try to stick to the necessities. I’m 16 weeks today, and already find myself barely fitting into my normal jeans, shorts, and even workout leggings! They’re just too tight on my belly! [Insert ugly crying face]. With Harley, I didn’t have this issue until much later on in the pregnancy.
While my goal is to wear as many non-maternity items as possible, I do think there are a few legit maternity pieces worth having:
- Skinny Jeans: I live in skinny jeans year round, even in the Summer. Personally, I think investing in a designer pair was worth the money, only because I wore them to death when I was pregnant with Harley. Heck, I even wore them for months after having her because they were just so much more comfortable! And now, I’m about a slice of pizza away from being in them completely for the next 24 weeks or so!
- Another Possible Option: If you’d really prefer to wear your regular jeans as long as possible, try a Maternity Belly Band. I’ve heard mixed reviews. Some people consider them a life saver, and others hate them. I personally never used one, so am open to hearing your thoughts! Also, some people use a rubber band or hair tie to close their normal jeans. I did this in the beginning with my first pregnancy, but feel more comfortable and secure in actual maternity jeans.
- Black Leggings: Finding a good, thick pair that can be worn during a sweaty workout as well as styled with a cute tunic is ideal. When going for a non-athleisure look, I recommend wearing a long enough top or cardigan to cover the tush. Like jeans, they look great with sneakers, flats, booties, and boots! As mentioned above, almost all of my non-maternity leggings dig into my stomach, so I need to get a maternity pair stat!
- Casual Body-Con Dress [preferably to the knee or midi length]: You may think I’m crazy for suggesting a tight fitting dress, but I personally think it’s so flattering when you can see your shape, your curves, and that baby bump!! There are tons of maternity and non-maternity options that will work, depending on how big that belly is! If you stick to a neutral color, you will get so much use out of this dress! It can literally take you from an office setting to date night.

Other “no brainers” for me are soft tee shirts, flowy tunics and dresses, and of course, cozy cardigans that aren’t necessarily considered “maternity,” but work with or without the bump.

As my belly grows, I’ll be sure to keep you posted on some more bump friendly finds! And I’ll definitely be taking more pictures too!
For the first 6 months I was able to get away with mostly non maternity. Now I am DEFINITELY living in maternity wear. At least on the bottom anyway. I agree that one pair of designer maternity jeans are a must. They wash so much better then the less expensive ones and they make me feel chic!
