Someone recently asked me how I’d describe my style, and without hesitation, responded “Casual Chic.” Even before entering the world of Motherhood, I have always gravitated towards wearing comfortable pieces, mostly in solid neutrals that I like to jazz up a bit. Wearing simple articles of clothing doesn’t mean you have to be Plain Jane or sacrifice looking fabulous in any way. In fact, you can still very much be trendy with this style choice.

Here are my tips on mastering Casual Chic:

1. Hair & Makeup: I finally have my “5 minute beauty routine” down pat. [Let me know if you’re interested in a video tutorial]. All I can say is, I’m thankful that topknots are in style and my hair is so dry that I can go almost a week without washing it! As far as makeup goes, I wear very minimal on a daily basis, but a little goes a long way. If my hair and face don’t look decent, it really doesn’t matter what I’m wearing on my body because I’m not going to feel confident [and confidence is key to always looking and feeling your best].

2. Layering: As mentioned here, layering makes outfits more thoughtful and intentional. I’ve talked about the three piece rule before which is often used in the retail and fashion world, and some companies even implement it in their dress code policy with the hopes their employees look polished. Think blazers, cardigans, vests, cropped or light-weight jackets, and unbuttoned collared shirts to wear as the outer layer. You can style a lace tank underneath a blouse that just slightly peeks out an inch from the bottom or you can get a little preppy and wear a collared shirt underneath a sweater. So many options!

3. Accessorize: Jewelry, hats, sunglasses, scarves, belts, and oversized watches can change an outfit drastically. You don’t have to go crazy over-accessorizing if you don’t want to, but adding one to two extra items can turn a basic outfit into something you’d see on the pages of a magazine. As much as I love wearing big statement earrings and necklaces, I’m also really into delicate jewelry lately. I love this chain link ring and personalized necklace. For the outfit pictured above, I kept things extremely simple with my Jennifer Zeuner initial necklace, Taudrey bracelets, and Karen Walker sunnies.

4. Neutral Palette: The majority of my closet consists of neutral colors: white, grey, taupe, beige, cream, brown, black. Whether worn alone or used to tone down bold colors and prints, you really can’t go wrong when investing in neutral pieces. The styling options are limitless and you’ll get the most bang for your buck when you can wear something so many different ways. I’m a sucker for a head to toe monochromatic look. Black on black is probably the most common and safe one color ensemble, but an all white, cream or grey outfit looks equally as chic!

5. Denim Jeans: I’m pretty sure I could live in skinny jeans every day of my life, but I honestly love and wear all different types of denim jeans. When I want to look more sophisticated or dressed up, I tend to wear dark indigo skinnies. If I opt for boyfriend style, I’ll pair them with heels and a blazer. Flared jeans look great with a sleek blouse tucked in.

6. Mix Feminine with Masculine: Combine unlikely pieces, like a casual tee with a skirt or a lace dress with a biker jacket. When tomboy and girly clothes are paired together [and correctly] it makes you look effortlessly cool.

Just an FYI, Bloomies is having their Friends & Family Sale from now until 11/15!
